MACCA’S
AFL GRAND FINAL ‘19 LED
Design / Copywriting
Macca’s came to us with around 2 weeks before the big dance saying they had a spot on the boundary LEDs – and I took on the brief. The design was straight forward, but what to say was up for discussion. There was talk of just use the ‘after the siren’ line but I knew we could do better. I jotted down some initial copy lines on paper, and had a thought of using the timeless Big Mac chant. “Two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun” and went there’s a play on the number with the final two teams. Added “And then there were...” holding with a pause before launching into Big Mac chant.
Given the tight deadline and usual round of approvals from the client, as soon as they saw the chant being incorporated into the signage messaging they approved it almost right there on the spot. A rather rare thing for Macca’s to do. With 2.939m watching the game on TV and attended by over 100,000 people it certainly got a few eyeballs too.
Macca’s liked it so much they used it again for the NRL Grand Final a few weeks later.

Here are a few of the other copylines I had for the boundary LEDs using my own line ‘In order to win..’ and the pre-existing line of ‘Supporting the after-siren..’
